Mechanical Design Engineer

The successful candidate will be responsible for the design, development, integration and optimisation of mechanical systems and components for specialised and armoured vehicle platforms, working across the product lifecycle from concept and detailed design through prototyping, testing and production.

This is an opportunity to work on technically complex vehicle programmes within a multidisciplinary engineering environment.

• Design and develop mechanical systems, structures and components for armoured and specialised vehicles.
• Develop detailed 3D CAD models, assemblies and manufacturing drawings.
• Design and integrate vehicle structures, chassis, suspension, driveline and associated mechanical subsystems.
• Perform engineering calculations, tolerance analysis and design verification.
• Conduct or support FEA, structural analysis, fatigue assessments and weight optimisation.
• Apply GD&T and Design for Manufacture and Assembly principles.
• Support the integration of mechanical systems with electrical, electronic and systems-engineering interfaces.
• Participate in concept development, feasibility studies and detailed design reviews.
• Develop and maintain Bills of Materials, specifications and engineering documentation.
• Support prototype builds, testing, validation and vehicle evaluation activities.
• Investigate design and manufacturing issues and implement engineering improvements.
• Provide technical support to manufacturing, production, procurement and suppliers.
• Participate in engineering change processes and maintain configuration and revision control.
• Ensure designs comply with applicable customer requirements, engineering standards, safety requirements and defence-industry specifications.
• Support the transition of designs from development into production.

• BEng / BSc / BTech / National Diploma in Mechanical or Design Engineering.
• Relevant mechanical design engineering experience, depending on seniority.
• Strong experience with 3D CAD software such as SolidWorks, Siemens NX, CATIA, Creo, Inventor or similar.
• Proven experience producing detailed manufacturing drawings and mechanical assemblies.
• Strong understanding of mechanical design principles, materials and manufacturing processes.
• Experience with fabrication, welding, machining and heavy mechanical structures.
• Knowledge of GD&T, tolerance analysis and Design for Manufacture.
• Exposure to FEA or other engineering analysis tools.
• Ability to interpret engineering specifications and technical documentation.
• Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
