Our client is seeking a commercially astute Underwriter – Mining Guarantees to join their Johannesburg-based Mining team. This opportunity is suited to a highly analytical professional who thrives in complex environments and enjoys balancing technical underwriting with relationship management and strategic problem-solving.
The successful candidate will manage and underwrite a diverse portfolio of mining clients ranging from privately held operations to publicly listed entities. The role focuses heavily on analysing financial statements, evaluating forward-looking mining models, structuring sophisticated guarantee transactions, and presenting recommendations to underwriting credit committees.You will also play an active role in strengthening client relationships and supporting ongoing digitalisation and automation initiatives within the business.

What You’ll Do- Analyse financial statements, conduct trend analysis, and capture financial data
- Assess forward-looking mining financial models and structure guarantee transactions
- Manage underwriting and servicing of mining rehabilitation guarantees and related products
- Conduct facility reviews and present recommendations to underwriting credit committees
- Manage and grow relationships with mining clients, brokers, and stakeholders
- Monitor industry developments and emerging mining sector risks
- Support automation and digitalisation initiatives within the underwriting environment
- Deliver premium client service and ensure long-term relationship retention
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Commerce, Mining Engineering, Law, or a related field
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in underwriting, financial services, mining, or credit environments
- Strong financial statement analysis and project finance capability
- Experience managing client relationships and navigating complex stakeholder engagements
- Strong commercial acumen with sound risk mitigation and analytical skills
- Ability to work independently while contributing to a collaborative team culture
- Professional qualifications such as CA(SA), CFA, or MBA advantageous
- General understanding of guarantees is highly beneficial
- Valid driver’s license with willingness to travel locally and internationally when required
- Confidently structures and motivates complex mining guarantee transactions
- Builds trusted, long-term client and broker relationships
- Delivers sound underwriting decisions aligned to business growth objectives
