Duties and Responsibilities of a Health and Safety Officer
- Compliance and Legal Duties
- Ensure the workplace complies with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and all relevant regulations.
- Keep up to date with health and safety legislation and communicate changes to management and staff.
- Prepare and maintain statutory documentation such as risk assessments, incident reports, and safety registers
- Risk Management
- Conduct regular risk assessments to identify hazards and implement control measures.
- Monitor high-risk activities (e.g., working at heights, electrical, demolition, confined spaces).
- Develop and update the companys Health & Safety Policy and safe work procedures.
- Training and Awareness
- Arrange induction programs for new employees and subcontractors.
- Facilitate training sessions on PPE usage, emergency procedures, fire safety, and first aid.
- Promote a strong safety culture through awareness campaigns, toolbox talks, and daily briefings
- Monitoring and Inspections
- Carry out regular site inspections and audits to check compliance with safety standards.
- Ensure correct use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Monitor equipment and machinery for safe operation.
- Incident and Emergency Response
- Lead investigations into accidents, incidents, and near-misses.
- Maintain records of all incidents and recommend corrective/preventive actions.
- Develop and test emergency response plans (fire drills, evacuation, first aid).
- Reporting and Communication
- Report safety performance, risks, and incidents to management.
- Prepare monthly/quarterly safety reports for internal review and client requirements
- Act as the point of contact between employees, management, and regulatory bodies regarding safety issues.
- Collaboration
- Work with project managers, supervisors, and coordinators to integrate safety into daily operations.
- Liaise with external inspectors, auditors, and contractors to ensure compliance.
- Support the HR department in handling worker compensation claims and return-to-work programs.
Requirements:
- South African Unemployed youth between the ages of 18 and 34.
- Must not have participated on the YES programme before.
- Matric
- Diploma/Bachelor of Health and Safety
