Process Plant Project Engineer – Mining Engineering Project House – Kempton Park
We are seeking a qualified Process Engineer with 5+ years experience in the mining engineering projects environment to support the design, development, planning and implementation of above-ground mining process plants and associated infrastructure projects.
The successful candidate will be responsible for process design, engineering calculations, plant layouts, equipment selection, process optimisation, project execution support and commissioning activities related to mineral processing facilities and plant installations.
The role requires experience in EPCM / project houses, consulting engineering firms, plant design environments or mining project execution teams involved in greenfield and brownfield projects.
Key Responsibilities
Process Design & Engineering- Develop process designs for above-ground mining and mineral processing plants.
- Prepare and review Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs), Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), mass balances and process calculations.
- Perform metallurgical and process evaluations to support project development.
- Develop process design criteria and engineering specifications.
- Prepare process narratives, operating philosophies and technical documentation.
- Support plant layout development and equipment arrangement studies.
- Participate in greenfield and brownfield mining projects, upgrades and plant expansions.
- Provide engineering input during project feasibility, conceptual, pre-feasibility and detailed design stages.
- Support project schedules, cost estimates and engineering deliverables.
- Coordinate engineering interfaces between process, mechanical, piping, civil, structural, electrical and instrumentation disciplines.
- Assist project teams with procurement packages and vendor evaluations.
- Review vendor drawings and technical submissions.
- Equipment Selection & Technical Support
Support specification and selection of process equipment including:
- Crushers and screens | Conveyors and materials handling systems | DMS plants | Milling and grinding circuits
- Flotation systems | Thickening and filtration systems | Pumps and slurry handling systems
- Water treatment systems | Tailings facilities and related infrastructure
- Prepare equipment datasheets and technical requisitions.
- Conduct process simulations and performance evaluations.
- Construction, Installation & Commissioning Support
- Provide technical support during construction and installation phases.
- Participate in factory acceptance testing (FAT) and site acceptance testing (SAT).
- Assist commissioning and plant start-up activities.
- Resolve technical issues arising during installation and commissioning.
- Conduct site inspections and monitor engineering compliance.
- Participate in HAZOP studies, design reviews and risk assessments.
- Ensure compliance with mining, engineering and safety standards.
- Apply quality assurance principles to engineering deliverables.
- Promote continuous improvement within engineering and project execution activities.
Minimum Requirements
Qualifications- BEng / BSc Engineering in: Chemical, Metallurgical, Process or Mineral Processing Engineering
- Registered or eligible for registration with Engineering Council of South Africa (Pr Eng advantageous).
- Minimum 5+ years experience in mining engineering projects, EPCM, consulting engineering or project house environments.
- Proven experience in above-ground mining plant design, planning and implementation projects.
- Experience across project phases including: Conceptual studies | Feasibility studies | Detailed engineering design | Procurement support | Construction support | Commissioning and handover
- Experience in one or more of the following process environments:
Tailings systems, Bulk materials handling systems, Water treatment plants, Ore sorting and beneficiation systems
Software / Systems Exposure- Process simulation software advantageous
- AutoCAD / plant layout exposure advantageous
- MS Project and engineering project tools beneficial
- MS Office Suite
- Understanding of engineering document control systems
