The Role: Senior Mechanical Engineer
This role exists to lead engineering operations, project execution, and product development while fast-tracking immersion into subsea and well control equipment. The main focus areas encompass in-house engineering and development, managing projects from inception to delivery, mentoring junior engineers, and ensuring operational quality and safety.
Key Responsibilities- Bring a minimum of 6 to 8 years of experience in a relatable engineering environment, including at least 3 years in a relevant mid-level engineering position within heavy engineering, offshore, oil and gas, or subsea sectors.
- Conduct strength calculations from first principles and perform FEA/Simulation when required.
- Perform 3D CAD modeling and drafting using SolidWorks.
- Generate complete manufacturing data packs, including Bills of Materials (BOMs), Quality Control Plans (QCPs), Work Instructions, and Manuals.
- Manage maintenance, repair, design, and manufacturing projects from inception to delivery, including procurement, logistics, resource planning, scheduling, and data book generation.
- Mentor junior mechanical engineers and technicians, review engineering deliverables, draft new procedures, and initiate corrective actions.
- Manage vendors during the fabrication stage and oversee manufacturing, quality control, and closeout.
- Shadow team members and physically participate in inspection and maintenance processes to build operational understanding of capital drilling equipment.
- Minimum of 6 to 8 years of experience in a relatable engineering environment.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in a relevant mid-level engineering position.
- Experience in the Heavy Engineering/Offshore, Oil and Gas, and Subsea sector.
- Mechanical Engineering Degree.
- Registration as a Professional Engineer (PrEng).
- Sound understanding of 3D CAD software (SolidWorks) and FEA software (SolidWorks Simulation).
- Sound understanding of manufacturing processes including fabrication, boilermaking/welding, and precision machining.
- Advanced knowledge of MS Office suite (Word, Excel, Teams).
- Strong interest in design.
- Excellent written and verbal English communication skills, with organizational, planning, time-management, and personnel management capabilities.
- Strong engineering theory, design expertise, project management experience, and a high safety ethic.
- Advantageous: Graduation from Stellenbosch University or University of Cape Town.
- Advantageous: Sound understanding of engineering calculation software such as Mathcad or MATLAB.
- Advantageous: Exposure to ASME VIII, API, and Class Rules (ABS & DNV) regarding design and manufacturing.
