Position Overview

The Fleet Controller / Transport Broker is a senior operational role responsible for the end‑to‑end control of a mixed owned‑fleet and brokerage operation. The role requires hands‑on management of company‑owned trucks while simultaneously brokering and controlling loads on a daily basis.

The incumbent will be accountable for service delivery, real‑time problem resolution, cost control, and immediate corrective action to protect the companys reputation and client relationships. This is a high‑pressure, decision‑critical role suited to a strong operational leader with deep transport experience.

The position is based in Durban and operates on 12‑hour shifts.

Key Responsibilities

Fleet & Load Control
  • Plan, allocate, and control daily movements .
  • Ensure optimal utilisation of owned and subcontracted vehicles to meet service and cost objectives.
  • Proactively manage route planning, delivery sequencing, and turnaround times.
  • Maintain continuous visibility of all vehicles and loads under control.
Service Delivery & Exception Management
  • Prevent and minimise demurrage, detention, storage, and standing time through proactive planning and early intervention.
  • Monitor delivery timelines closely and act immediately on late arrivals, delays, or service deviations.
  • Communicate professionally and timeously with clients regarding any operational challenges.
  • Ensure all service commitments are met in line with agreed client SLAs.
Driver Management & Discipline
  • Directly manage company drivers and subcontractors in real time.
  • Address misconduct, non‑compliance, or performance issues immediately using firm but fair disciplinary action.
  • Enforce company operating standards, safety rules, and client‑specific requirements.
  • Escalate serious incidents appropriately while maintaining operational continuity.
Brokerage & Subcontractor Control
  • Source, allocate, and manage third‑party transporters to meet load demand.
  • Ensure subcontractors comply with safety, documentation, insurance, and service standards.
  • Monitor subcontractor performance and take corrective action where standards are not met.
  • Maintain strong working relationships with reliable transport partners.
Cross‑Functional Coordination
  • Work closely with fleet, operations, admin, and accounts teams to ensure a seamless end‑to‑end service.
  • Ensure all load data, PODs, timesheets, and supporting documents are accurately captured and submitted.
  • Support accounts with billing accuracy, dispute resolution, and cost recovery.
  • Contribute to a team‑based service culture, ensuring the client experiences a single, coordinated operation.
Compliance & Reporting
  • Ensure all movements comply with road regulations, safety standards, and company policies.
  • Maintain accurate operational records and system updates.
  • Provide clear operational feedback to management on risks, bottlenecks, and improvement opportunities.
Working Hours & Conditions
  • 12‑hour shifts
  • Monday to Sunday, including public holidays
  • Shift‑based operational environment
  • Remuneration structure includes weekends and public holidays

Required Experience & Skills

Experience
  • Minimum 58 years experience in fleet control, transport operations, or road freight brokerage.
  • Proven experience managing high‑volume transport operations.
  • Strong background in containerised transport, depot operations, and time‑critical deliveries (advantageous).
