Purpose of the Role:
The Operational Clinical Nurse Specialist provides clinical leadership and operational oversight within the hospital Theatre environment.

Sound and contemporary knowledge of the operating theatre, together with an advanced understanding of professional nursing, health care delivery and programme planning, allows the Operational CNS to fulfil the following primary roles: Operational management, Advanced clinical care, Consultation as a source of expert knowledge, Clinical teaching of staff and learners, Research, Leadership

This role ensures the delivery of high-quality patient care, supports nursing staff development, and contributes to the strategic objectives of the hospital through effective management of clinical operations.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Provide expert clinical guidance and support to nursing and allied health teams.
  2. Monitor, evaluate, and improve patient care practices and clinical outcomes.
  3. Assist in the development and implementation of hospital policies, procedures, and standards.
  4. Support operational management, including resource allocation, scheduling, and workflow optimization.
  5. Mentor, train, and develop clinical staff to enhance competencies and professional growth.
  6. Ensure compliance with regulatory and accreditation requirements.
  7. Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to promote patient safety and high-quality care.
  8. Participate in quality improvement initiatives and clinical audits.
  9. Act as a point of contact for complex clinical situations and provide solutions to operational challenges.

Inherent Requirements:

Registered as a registered /professional Nurse with the South African Nursing Council or equivalent NQF level 7 nursing qualification.
A post basic nursing qualification in Operating room nursing, together with contemporary skills and knowledge of that specialty.
Relevant experience in Cath Lab, Theatre, Cardiac or ICU would be advantageous.

Thorough knowledge of theatre nursing theory and practice. Extensive knowledge of modern nursing care principles and practices in the theatre

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Registered Nurse (R.N.) with a valid South African nursing license.
  • Postgraduate qualification or specialization in a relevant clinical field is preferred.
  • Extensive clinical experience in a hospital theatre setting, including senior or leadership roles.
  • Proven experience in clinical operations, staff management, and quality improvement initiatives.

Reporting Line: Reports to the Hospital Nursing Manager / Operational Head.
